I Count - We can stop climate chaos

With This Ring...
I Go Green

A Cornish couple will tie the knot this weekend in what could be Britain’s greenist ever wedding.

Alexia Muskett (38) and Russell Geake (30) came together through a shared passion for climate change campaigning and therefore thought it only appropriate to make their big day as environmentally friendly as possible.

Invitations to the ceremony, which takes place tomorrow (15th September) in Par in Cornwall, were sent out by email, while the order of service was printed using vegetable dye on recycled paper donated from a local factory .

The bride, who will wear a second-hand dress adapted by a designer friend, will arrive at Porthpean Church by electric car. After exchanging wooden wedding rings sourced from a tree cut down to make way for the Newbury Bypass, the couple and their guests will walk just five minutes to the reception where they will feast on locally produced food and wine sourced from a Cornish vineyard.

In addition, Alexia’s mother fashioned the flowers for the event from used carrier bags after reading an origami book, while the confetti was made from fallen spring blossoms gathered earlier in the year.

"It's about keeping the meaning,” said Alexia. "At the end of it, it's the event, the meaning you take away from the event and how much you've enjoyed yourself rather than the stuff you fill the marquee with."

The happy couple hope the entire event will be rendered “carbon negative” by giving a low energy light bulb to each of their 100 guests. Groom Russell estimates that the bulbs over their lifetime will save around 32 tonnes of CO2 entering the atmosphere.
